If you don’t know (and where have you been, under a rock?? Just kidding.) VSS stands for Very Short Story.
In fact, this story has to fit in one (recently increased character count) Tweet.
There are daily prompt words for these Very Short Stories, so to play along, you write a story using the daily prompt word. You don’t have to start on January 1st, the 365 just means that it’s daily.
Hawk and Young have been participating in these and we would like to share a bunch of them with you.
From deep inside the sweltering hatchery came a crack and tweet. It was not the peep Myron expected. He frowned down at the egg shell bits scattered around the incubator as a panting young Phoenix rested its overlarge head.
“He sold me the wrong egg!”— Hawk&Young (@HawkandYoung) May 30, 2018
“It wasn’t always an island. Before the quake in ’25, it was part of the west coast.”
“You mean before the planet fought back against the humans?”
“That’s one way to look at it.”— Hawk&Young (@HawkandYoung) May 30, 2018
“You’re sayin’ these spaceships been out there for millenia, jus’ waitin’ for us to notice them before they attack?”
“They’ve been back and forth from their galaxy to ours, but yes.”
“That ain’t the whiskey talking?”
“I’m not drinking, you are.”— Hawk&Young (@HawkandYoung) May 27, 2018

The tracker implant was a yoke, a burden. They always knew where I was. I learned to delegate, though, and to trust others. But being dependent on their success for my plans to work was crippling my edge. I was going slowly insane waiting.— Hawk&Young (@HawkandYoung) May 25, 2018
Her hand trembled over the handle to the airlock.
“Release him!” commanded the alien Overlord.
She closed her eyes and turned the lock. The scream haunted her dreams for years later, but the collar around her neck forced her to obey.— Hawk&Young (@HawkandYoung) May 20, 2018

Manipulating the strands of time was an art. One had to see into the past and the future, the cause and effect, to do it just right. As she wove, her hair wrapped itself into braids as if mimicking her prayer for forgiveness for what she wrought.— Hawk&Young (@HawkandYoung) May 19, 2018
Staring at the X in the corner of the screen above the last remaining operating program, the Captain shed a tear. The final escape pod had left, but he must go down with his ship. The chill of space made him shiver as he clicked the oxygen system off.

Rivulets of water streamed across the tile floor picking up blood and turning pink as they passed by the bodies strewn about in odd contortions. The raised submarine was telling no tales, but evidence dripped out by the second.

Legs wobbly, every breath drying the insides of him, he was on the verge of collapse. The only thing keeping him going was the thought that over the next dune would be a rover and seated in it would be his navigator. If he saw her again, he’d tell her…everything— Hawk&Young (@HawkandYoung) May 22, 2018
And we get the best compliments sometimes!!
Y’all are fun and informative tweeters. I see the name in the timeline and it’s usually something interesting. I appreciate that.
